Rally kit cars are purpose-built competition vehicles that use a space-frame or bespoke chassis, rather than being derived from a standard production road car. Manufacturers produce dedicated competition kits that teams assemble and prepare, allowing greater engineering freedom than standard homologated classes. Kit cars featured prominently in national championships and some WRC events in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The most successful kit car-era machines competed directly against Group A and WRC cars. The Peugeot 306 Maxi and Citroen Xsara Kit Car in particular achieved significant results at WRC-nominated events. Rally kit cars represent an interesting and often more affordable alternative to conventional production-based rally cars, with the appeal of a machine designed purely for competition from the ground up.
